Satoshi Nakamoto is the pseudonym used by the person or group of people who created Bitcoin, authored its whitepaper, and developed its original software. Despite years of investigation and speculation, Satoshi's true identity has never been confirmed.
What Satoshi Created
In October 2008, Satoshi published "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System" on a cryptography mailing list. The Bitcoin network launched on January 3, 2009, with the mining of the genesis block.
Disappearance
Satoshi was active in Bitcoin's development and forums until mid-2010, then gradually withdrew. Their last known communication was in April 2011. Since then, Satoshi has been completely silent.
Satoshi's Bitcoin
Satoshi is estimated to hold approximately 1 million BTC from early mining, worth tens of billions of dollars. These coins have never been moved, adding to the mystery. The smallest denomination of Bitcoin — the "satoshi" (0.00000001 BTC) — is named in their honor.
Why Anonymity Matters
Satoshi's anonymity is often cited as a feature, not a bug. It ensures that Bitcoin has no identifiable leader who could be pressured, arrested, or worshipped, reinforcing Bitcoin's truly decentralized nature.
